Conservative reactions to the limited release of files related to the Epstein case have been sharply divided, with certain backers of the former Trump administration pointing out the noticeable presence of former President Clinton and other Democrats in images, while others lamented how extensive redactions portray former President Trump and GOP members in a unfavorable manner.
Justice Department Justifies Redactions with Strong Hyperbole
Justice Department officials justified the redactions with fervent hyperbole. “Never in American the nation's history has a Commander-in-Chief or the Justice Department been this open with the American people about such a delicate legal matter,” declared Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche, who released a detailed memo describing the censorship process.
Concerns Raised by Blacked-Out Sections
While the former president's name and likeness appear in some of the documents, the widespread redactions prompt significant concerns about the information may be hidden behind them. Some conservative lawmakers immediately called for greater transparency.
“People are furious and disengaging,” posted Republican Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene.
Via a social media post, GOP Congressman Thomas Massie said the redactions violate the statute, and suggested that a future Congress may attempt to remove the top law enforcement official, Pam Bondi, for that violation. “Regrettably, today’s file dump grossly fails to comply with both the intent and the letter of the law,” he continued.
A Faction of Rightwing Commentators Rally In Support of the Disclosure
However, some conservative pundits and former President loyalists came out strongly in support of the Justice Department's actions.
The release—from a justice department led by close Trump ally Pam Bondi—includes hundreds of documents that are completely censored, and many of the men shown in pictures have their faces blacked out.
But a few do not, featuring prominent individuals like Clinton, pop singer Michael Jackson, and academic Noam Chomsky. The inclusion of the former president, especially, allowed some conservative figures to launch the attack.
“This is pretty rich how the political left wrongly claimed Donald Trump of associating with a sex offender, only for the Trump DOJ to release Epstein files that depict Bill Clinton swimming nude with a convicted sex offender,” wrote conservative commentator Laura Loomer.
“Recently released Epstein Files reveal Bill Clinton without a shirt in a hot tub with a woman that is not his wife Hillary Clinton,” wrote lawyer Rogan O’Handley. “There is only 1 explanation Epstein would take pictures of a Commander-in-Chief with a girl in a jacuzzi: Blackmail.”
Clinton Campaign Issues Statement
Bill Clinton has consistently stated he was aware of no criminal actions by Epstein and has not been accused to have engaged in any misconduct. “The White House has not been hiding these files for months only to release them at the last minute on a Friday to protect Bill Clinton,” Clinton’s spokesperson Angel Ureña stated in a comment.
“This is about shielding officials from future revelations, or from information they will try and hide forever. Therefore they can publicize as many low-quality decades-old photos as they want, but this isn’t about Bill Clinton. Not previously, never will be,” the response concluded.
Overall Rightwing Commentary Remains Subdued
However, overall discourse on the right was comparatively subdued following the disclosure, especially when juxtaposed against the loud calls for transparency that came before the congressional approval to enact a law requiring the files' release.
Loomer, who recently accepted press credentials at the Defense Department, had been one of the most vocal proponents for a full disclosure. In February, she criticized the Justice Department broadly and Bondi in particular after a set of rightwing influencers were provided physical binders of materials that contained no previously unseen information.
