Guitar Hero Turns 20 – The Plastic Guitar That Connected Generations Among Rock Generations

Marking 20 years after Guitar Hero first launched in North America, providing everyday gamers the opportunity to become a rock star. Figuratively speaking, but try telling that anyone who's mastered Free Bird’s four-minute instrumental break in front of an enthusiastic crowd of friends.

Created by Harmonix, the game provided users with a guitar-shaped controller to follow coloured notes moving along the display in time with a song. Every sequence mimicked particular chords, producing the feel of a genuine live show.

The studio had already experimented with rhythm games prior to teaming up with the publisher, which was purchased by the gaming giant in 2006. Collaboratively, they laid the foundations for an unlikely billion-dollar franchise that had a remarkable impact for many musicians featured, showcasing classic groups to a new generation of younger players.

A former executive, former COO of Harmonix, recalls the early budgetary hurdles of licensing the recordings – even though the first two games primarily featured cover versions.

“We reproduced every song because the dollar figure was so high,” he says. “Even with the publishing rights by themselves, it was extremely difficult. We couldn’t get acts such as legendary groups – RedOctane had virtually no money, and we were fairly certain it would fail. However, when Guitar Hero became a hit, album purchases airtime were going up, everyone wanted to participate.”

He adds: “One of the amazing things was the number of parents reached out expressing gratitude for introducing their kids to the music they loved. It evolved into a multigenerational thing.”

Classic Rock Finds Younger Fans

Northern Irish blues-rock band one featured act had their track in the 2008 release Guitar Hero World Tour. Lead musician the artist recalls the way the game revived older hits back into vogue: “The game offered a larger, younger audience. Typically this had been considered outdated material, but then when it was included in the game young people discovered it, suddenly it was cool. This validated the genre, eliminating the ‘dad rock’ label. It provided all our music renewed popularity.”

At that time, the band's first record remained unreleased stateside, so Guitar Hero was a key medium of discovery for the group during their a North American tour supporting AC/DC. “Their crew were playing the song during travel, and several recognized us from Guitar Hero,” Mahon says.

Major Band Spin-offs Enduring Impact

Rock’s heavyweight names quickly took advantage of the game's success, including bands like Aerosmith, Metallica and Van Halen featuring in dedicated spin-off titles centered around their music collections and related stories, imagery and rock’n’roll mythology. In the case of, Guitar Hero: Aerosmith, reportedly to have made the band more money compared to their records. It moved well over 500,000 copies upon release, while demand for Aerosmith’s music rose of up to 40% at a time as the industry faced decline.

Guitar Hero still motivates quick-handed dedication within the community. Recently, an online personality achieved a remarkable feat featuring the challenging track – an infamously tough anthem popularized through Guitar Hero – using a fan-made version, a no-cost alternative with almost identical gameplay but an array of customisation options. The song is difficult even in the hardest setting, let alone played at increased tempo and without missing every one of its near 4,000 notes. They claimed requiring nine months to accomplish.

“The game offers a, imaginary experience. Just as with Call of Duty, that doesn’t mean you ought to pick up actual weapons and go to war,” notes DragonForce guitarist Herman Li.

The band had already wrapped up a profitable run when their hit was featured on Guitar Hero III, yet he explains it made them widely recognized. “I remember our distributors calling to tell me that our selling albums rapidly,” he says. “It exploded when we next toured, and we performed just before the headliners at the event.”

Indeed, the band's visibility via the game was so immense that it has threatened to eclipsing everything else the band has done. Last year, the track was used in a trailer for a major film. “Previously I thought otherwise, but I’ve made peace with it,” he admits. “Should you just hear one DragonForce song, that's fine – each person has their own path in music and I'm pleased we’ve been part of people’s lives”.

The Lasting Legacy from the Plastic Guitar

Top-tier promotion, be it for cars, apparel or games, goes further than selling something – it evokes a desire. Did Guitar Hero harness this? “Precisely what our team aiming to achieve,” Dornbrook says. “That thrill of performing as a rock star on the stage. Since the beginning, the creators believed humans have a natural human desire to make music, and their goal was to leverage innovation to enable everyone to participate”.

The majority installments were released over a mere half-decade between 2005 and 2010, including derivative titles such as DJ Hero, including a turntable controller, and Band Hero. Subsequently, corporate focus in plastic instruments waned, aside from a brief comeback several years later.

Titles such as the fan project and Fortnite Festival have kept the scene active, with set to be something from the original publisher in development. Recently formed developers has entered production on their first music game. Original co-founders are both involved as special advisers. Are gamers ready to embrace a new entry following the classic?

“We thought such titles might become like Madden allowing annual releases,” Dornbrook says. “There’s so much new music it could remain evergreen, so I’ve always been hopeful. There’s no reason for it to persist with new generations.”
