No fewer than 11 of the meteorological balloons, carrying 18,000 packs of contraband cigarettes, have since been recovered

Meteorological devices containing a large quantity of cigarettes have caused flight disruptions in Lithuania, as Lithuania's primary air hub was required to halt operations for hours when numerous of them drifted across the airspace of Lithuania.

Air Travel Interruptions

The temporary shutdown led to thirty canceled flights affecting six thousand travelers, with airport representatives alerting that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.

Border Security Response

Authorities reported that 25 meteorological balloons were detected entering Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with a pair of them ending up right above the aviation facility.

Up to 14 of the weather balloons launched over the weekend drifted across the capital region, which is the location of Lithuania's primary metropolis and adjacent to the border with Belarus.

Illegal Goods Seizure

At least 11 balloons containing 18,000 packs of black-market cigarettes have been collected so far, though this number could rise, according to border security officials.

Cross-Border Contraband Trend

Although causing problems, officials emphasized that "Balloons with contraband - cigarettes from Belarus - are common occurrences in the Baltic region and Poland."

Since January, 544 balloons have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while 966 were documented the previous year.

Neighboring Country Impact

At the same time, the border area of Poland, which likewise adjoins Belarus, has documented over 100 cases in which illegal goods were transported from its neighbor using the weather devices.

Illegal Transport Methods

In response to questions about why smugglers utilize a method that is highly susceptible to weather factors rather than simpler to operate drones, officials clarified that "Atmospheric equipment are simple mechanisms used by contraband transporters - they are cheaper than drones for moving tobacco products from Belarus."

Border Protection Aims

Officials added that "Our services' aim is to seize the largest possible quantities of contraband and to apprehend coordinators and perpetrators so that this activity become unprofitable and create minimal risk to passenger aircraft."

Regional Security Context

Such border infiltrations occur during a time of increased concerns in Europe following various aerial device infiltrations that have caused air traffic disruption across the region.

Recent incidents in neighboring countries have led European authorities to speed up talks about enhancing aerial security throughout the continent.
